In healthcare, every minute matters — yet for many physicians, those precious minutes are often consumed by paperwork.
That’s what Aivida, a Manitoba-based AI healthcare startup developing AI-driven healthcare solutions, set out to change. Their new product, Scribble, is an artificial intelligence scribe that streamlines clinical documentation so doctors can focus on patient care, not administrative tasks.
“Physicians want to see more patients, but they don’t want to sacrifice quality when they’re doing that,” said Marcus Wiens, Head of Innovation at Aivida. “Scribble AI offers a hands-free solution.”
With the patient’s permission, Scribble securely transcribes conversations between doctors and patients. From there, it automatically generates clinical notes — known as SOAP notes — along with requisition forms, prescriptions, billing codes, and sick notes.

In a recent Canadian clinical simulation study, Scribble improved physician efficiency by 23 per cent. “When they were usually seeing 10 patients in a day, now they can see 12, at a higher quality of care,” Wiens said.
Aivida’s focus on helping physicians spend more time with patients started with a simple mission: fix inefficiency in healthcare. “We’re not just adding a few more patients a day,” Wiens said. “We also have the potential to save doctors from burnout.”
By automating documentation, Aivida’s technology gives doctors more than time — it gives them breathing room.
The Team Behind this AI Healthcare Startup Tech
The Aivida team may be small, but it’s powered by deep expertise. Wiens, alongside his day-to-day crew including Sajjad Heydari, a PhD candidate from the University of Manitoba, and Aditya Sharma, another talented backend developer, meet weekly to plan projects, review progress, and test new ideas with their executive team and an advisory board of clinicians.
Their latest solution, Miiya, is a real-time AI medical consultant designed to work alongside doctors and provide accurate recommendations without hallucinations.
“We’ve built a medical-grade system that handles medical knowledge and makes non-hallucinatory recommendations to doctors in real time,” Wiens said. “It means doctors don’t have to rebook patients — they have an always-available consult to make decisions right away.”
In the world of artificial intelligence, “hallucinations” happen when an AI application fabricates or guesses information that isn’t real — something Aivida has worked hard to eliminate. Their system only draws from verified medical knowledge bases, ensuring accuracy and safety for both physicians and patients.
Protecting Innovation Through ElevateIP
Aivida’s progress has been bolstered by the ElevateIP Program, a federal initiative that helps startups identify and protect their intellectual property. In the Prairies, the program is delivered by North Forge.
“One of the benefits of having ElevateIP really help us out was the fact that it gave us a safe space to operate and try new things,” Wiens said. “Because we needed our IP protected early on, we felt more free in taking chances.”
Through the program, Aivida secured NDAs, trademarks, and the legal frameworks necessary to protect its growing portfolio of technology.
“The process has been fantastic,” Wiens said. “Our partner was extremely detail-oriented and helped us get all of our trademarks in order. It’s set us up for success.”
A Call to Manitoba’s Medical Community
While Aivida’s technology has already gained traction with telehealth companies across Canada, Wiens hopes to bring more Manitoba clinics on board.
“We’d love to work with more doctors and clinics, especially locally,” he said. “We’ve done really well outside of Manitoba, and we’d love to come back home and work with more Manitoba-based physicians, because we are a Manitoba-based company.”
