PCL Construction has helped build and transform communities for more than a century. Known for major infrastructure and commercial projects, PCL has also led innovation within the construction industry through its Job Site Insights™ (JSI) platform—a cloud-based tool built on Microsoft Azure that collects, analyzes, and reports job site data in real-time.
JSI uses IoT (Internet of Things) sensors to monitor site conditions like humidity, temperature, and vibration, helping teams respond quickly and predictively to environmental changes. These features reduce project risks, improve quality control, and lower costs across the build cycle.

FabLab™: A Resource for R&D and Prototyping
When PCL Construction set out to explore locally made IoT sensors to integrate into JSI, they visited the North Forge Fabrication Lab™. What they discovered was more than just access to tools, it was a supportive environment for experimentation and rapid prototyping.
“One of the reasons why we first approached North Forge was to explore building sensors locally using the IoT lab,” said Cody Nowell, Construction Services Manager at PCL. “But once we toured the lab and got to know the team, we realized this was a hub for innovation in Manitoba.”
The FabLab gave PCL access to equipment, technical expertise, and a network of innovators to test ideas, iterate quickly, and explore new possibilities for their platform.
Why Environments Like the FabLab Matter
For companies like PCL that develop in-house technologies, having access to rapid prototyping tools and fabrication equipment can accelerate testing and reduce development costs. While PCL’s IoT Innovation Lab is no longer active at the FabLab, the experience reflects how even established companies can benefit from engaging with innovation ecosystems like North Forge.
“Being able to support and access a network of people that can help drive business forward in Manitoba was a valuable opportunity,” said Nowell.
