When it comes to product innovation, speed is everything. PPG Technologies understands this better than most. Founded by Adam Tsouras and Gord Parke, the Winnipeg-based firm helps businesses turn ideas into functional hardware and software products, from app and web development to custom electronics and product management with the help of the North Forge FabLab.

Their story began in 2010, when the duo experimented with attaching a sensor to a golf club and pairing it with an app. What started as a fun side project quickly gained industry attention after a viral YouTube video sparked interest across the golf community. This led to a partnership with SkyGolf, makers of the SkyCaddie, to bring their first product—SkyPro—to market.

From that moment on, PPG Technologies evolved into a full-service hardware and software development company. Their portfolio now includes successful projects like TrapTap, a Bluetooth-enabled speed trap indicator that launched through a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016.

How the FabLab Made a Difference

Before joining North Forge, prototyping hardware meant long waits and expensive outsourcing.

“Before becoming a member, we had to send off our designs for electronic circuit boards (PCBs) to the States to be built. It was costly and could take weeks,” said Parke. “With the equipment at the North Forge FabLab, we could build a design in a few hours at a fraction of the cost.”

Access to the FabLab’s PCB prototyping tools gave the PPG team the freedom to experiment, test, and iterate on their designs quickly—something that would have been impossible with traditional manufacturing timelines. That flexibility empowered them to innovate faster and reduce costs for their clients.

Why Winnipeg and North Forge?

Parke noted that Winnipeg’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is uniquely supportive. “We’ve met so many talented people who are genuinely enthusiastic about helping startups. Their support and collective wisdom made starting a business here much easier.”

Reflecting on their early days, Parke adds, “I wish North Forge had been around in its current form when we were starting out. It would have helped us avoid several costly mistakes.”

Final Thoughts

Today, PPG Technologies continues to push boundaries with its innovative approach to hardware and software development. With the support of North Forge and the tools provided by the FabLab, they’ve proven that with the right resources, Winnipeg founders can compete—and succeed—on a global stage.
