What do you get when you combine creativity, precision, and a deep love of logic? For mechanical puzzle maker John Haché, the answer is innovation and North Forge’s FabLab™ is his playground.
John Haché, a graduate of Red River College’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program, has been a core part of the North Forge community for more than four years. Known for designing intricate mechanical puzzles, he’s also a mentor and workshop facilitator, sharing his knowledge of laser cutting, 3D printing, and digital fabrication with new members.

Turning Passion into Purpose
After joining the North Forge FabLab, John quickly went from student to teacher. He began hosting workshops, training members on key machines, and eventually became the go-to mentor for anything laser- or puzzle-related.
“I’d go into the FabLab™, and it would make me smile every time,” says Haché. “Someone’s always making something beautiful or cool, and I love being able to share my tips and tricks through workshops and one-on-one sessions.”
Most of John’s puzzles are created right in the lab. From wire entanglement puzzles to Rubik’s Cube-style mechanisms, his designs often take two to three days to prototype, depending on complexity.
Support That Makes a Difference
For a time, John supported his membership by taking on engraving contracts, including custom glassware for The Forks Commons. That changed when Western Scrap Metals Inc. stepped in.
“They offered to sponsor a deserving member, and it turned out to be me,” he says. “Now I can focus on building and teaching, which has been incredible.”
Faith Kaplan, Vice President of Business Transformation at Western Scrap Metals Inc., shared,
“We’re proud to support North Forge. Its members represent the future of manufacturing in Manitoba, and that future is important to our success as a fourth-generation family business.”
Global Recognition, Local Roots
While puzzles may be a hobby, they’ve taken John around the world. Through the International Puzzle Party, he’s traveled to Asia, Europe, and the U.S., trading designs and connecting with puzzle makers globally.
“Each year, I make more impressive designs thanks to the skills I’ve gained at the FabLab,” says Haché. “It’s amazing how something you love can open doors across the world.”
Building Skills for a Bright Future
Though he’s eyeing a future in computer-aided design and machining, John remains focused on his craft for now. Whether mentoring new members or crafting his next design, John exemplifies what the FabLab™ is all about creativity, collaboration, and community.
