Empowering Future Founders: Youth Entrepreneurship Education at MICE

Jan 9, 2019

The Met Innovation Centre for Entrepreneurship (MICE), launched in September 2018, continues to be a powerful platform for youth entrepreneurship education in Manitoba. Designed for young people eager to explore startups rooted in innovation and tech, the program offers real-world experiences that connect classroom learning to entrepreneurial action.

Developed by Maples Met School, MICE responds directly to students’ desire to build businesses and engage with mentors who understand both the technical side and the strategic design of launching a venture.

Partnering with North Forge to Build Entrepreneurial Skills

North Forge proudly partners with MICE to facilitate deeper learning through hands-on mentorship and immersive startup experiences. Each Tuesday, students intern with local entrepreneurs in aligned industries. These experiences help learners build the essential skills needed to bring their ideas to life.

Weekly Mentorship and Skill Development

Every Thursday, MICE students return to North Forge for group mentorship sessions where they present updates, refine their startup models, and are introduced to key contacts within the innovation ecosystem. They also complete weekly online learning modules that provide foundational knowledge in entrepreneurship theory and business design.

To further equip students with innovation skills, MICE integrates Innovation Engineering Blue Belt Certification through InVision Edge. This gives learners a proven framework for innovating quickly and successfully — a toolkit they’ll carry into future careers or ventures.

A Vision That Aligns with the Future of Education

Matt Henderson, Assistant Superintendent of the Seven Oaks School Division, shared the origin of the program.

“It was interesting how Jeff and I were thinking the same idea independently. We connected at the right time, realizing students need a program where they’re fully immersed in real startups while developing the human and technical skills needed for the future of work.”

MICE students have explored ventures ranging from autonomous robotics and app development to social enterprises. The results have been impressive. “I’m blown away by their confidence and growth in design thinking,” said Henderson. “They articulate their ideas with such passion and clarity.”

Jeff Ryzner, then President of North Forge, echoed the sentiment.

“These students have exceeded my expectations in creativity and commitment. It’s the kind of education I wish I had in high school. I can’t help but wonder what our province would look like if every student had access to a program like this.”

North Forge continues to support youth entrepreneurship education by mentoring tomorrow’s founders today. Want to partner with us to shape the next generation of innovators? Learn more about the MICE program here.
