On September 16, 2016, Konex unveiled its innovative cable wakeboard system at a high-energy launch event at its research facility in Vermette, just outside Winnipeg’s Perimeter. Nearly 200 people attended to celebrate the moment, enjoying food trucks, music, and live demos by pro wakeboarders.
From Wake Park to Workshop
Daniel Kathan, who founded Konex at age 25, developed the idea after working at a cable wake park. Frustrated by the downtime, lack of customization, and poor performance of existing cable systems, Daniel set out to build something better. He and his father, Alan, spent three years developing the Konex system, combining hands-on experience with a clear vision for innovation.
The North Forge Advantage
North Forge played a key role in Konex’s journey from idea to commercialization. Then-President Jeff Ryzner recognized the startup’s potential early on and supported the team as they worked to refine their prototype and build a viable business.
“They went from dreamers to disruptors,” said Ryzner.
Superior Performance, Clean Design
Konex’s patented cable system is engineered for performance and reliability. It’s safer, easier to maintain, and more cost-effective to service than competitor systems. Its sleek design appeals to the wakeboarding community’s sense of style — and the ride quality speaks for itself.
A Startup Making Waves
Konex is a homegrown Manitoba success story, built on tenacity, technical excellence, and support from the innovation ecosystem. Its breakthrough in wakeboarding technology positions it as a global player in the cable sports industry.
