Funding Change is leading a digital raffle revolution by transforming how nonprofits and community organizations raise money. With early support and mentorship from North Forge, the Winnipeg-based startup created a secure and accessible platform that brings 50/50 draws and fundraising raffles online. This innovation makes it easier for Manitobans to give back while enjoying the excitement of a chance to win.
Taking raffle tickets online was a giant leap for games of chance, and an even bigger one for the nonprofits they support.
For Ian Smith, CEO of Funding Change, that leap began at a Winnipeg Jets game in 2014. With cash in hand and no ticket seller in sight, he found himself wondering, “Why can’t I just use my phone?”
That question stayed with him long after the final buzzer. His research revealed that the law at the time prohibited online-only lotteries. But when legislation changed in December 2014, that roadblock disappeared—and Funding Change was born.
Making Fundraising Accessible, Efficient, and Secure
Smith invited his friend Nicholas Tenszen to join as Chief Financial Officer, and Dan Major came on board to develop the platform. They were soon matched with mentor at North Forge, and by August 2015, development began in earnest.
The company launched a year later with a mission to make fundraising easier for nonprofits. It is now licensed by the Liquor and Gaming Authority of Manitoba and certified by Gaming Labs International.
“North Forge’s mentorship kept us [Funding Change] grounded through the highs and lows,” said Smith. “If you’ve never run a startup, you only see the glamour. North Forge talked us off a cliff many times.”
With a background in online marketing and nonprofit work, Smith knew the struggles many organizations faced. “They’re often understaffed and slow to adopt new tech. But they’re also mission-driven and deserve better tools to fundraise.”
Helping Nonprofits Adapt and Thrive
To support that goal, Funding Change launched the Tools of Change campaign. The initiative was a direct response to widespread cuts in healthcare and nonprofit funding. It offers a secure, user-friendly digital option for fundraising—backed by a team that understands the sector’s unique needs.
“People love winning stuff, and Manitobans are famously generous,” said Smith. “That’s a perfect match for online raffles.”
The model has gained the attention of investors. In January 2017, Funding Change raised $1 million from local strategic investors. The funding allowed them to expand into combining in-person and online raffle sales, and paved the way for growth into Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and beyond.
Through it all, Smith says the local support was key.
“If you have an idea, go to North Forge. They’ll tell you if you’re crazy or not. Surround yourself with incredible people and you’ll give yourself the best chance to succeed.”
