July Lunch & Learn – Newcomer Entrepreneurship

Newcomers to Canada play a large role in the creation of new businesses. Entrepreneurship can be a viable career option or an alternative when seeking meaningful employment. The journey into entrepreneurship can be overwhelming and challenging on its own, and even more so in a new country. Whether you came to Canada as a business immigrant, foreign investor or self-employed individual, there is plenty of support and a variety of resources to help you through the process of establishing your own business.

Please join us to learn how to get started, where to find helpful support and resources, and how to launch a successful business in Manitoba as a newcomer!

    Speaker:

Serge Kaptegaine • Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Serge came to Canada as a refugee in 2005.

Since his arrival in Canada, Serge has been involved with the well being and settlement of newcomers in Manitoba. In 2005, he founded an organization called Hand in Hand for Peace with the objective of educating Canadians about the reality of being a newcomer. Through Hand in Hand for Peace, he raised awareness and funds to support organizations helping child victims of war, such as Save the Children Canada and War Child Canada.

In 2009, Serge realized that many newcomers were continuing to struggle to find employment in Canada. As a solution, he proposed and formed a non-profit organization called the Canadian Centre for Refugees Employment (CCRE), a Canadian service provider that promotes the skills and talents of newcomers to ensure independence and facilitate their integration into Canada.

Today, Serge is the Executive Director of IDEA Canada Inc., a non-profit organization that offers unique and innovative newcomer youth programs and community-wide projects that promote inclusion, diversity and equality in Manitoba.

We will also be joined by panelists that will share their experience! Stay tuned for panelist profiles!

Please RSVP to [email protected] to reserve your spot!

A light lunch will be served.

April Lunch & Learn – Intro to Machine Learning

Join Haider Al-Saidi as he discusses the topic of Machine Learning, a field of computer science that gives computer systems the ability to “learn” with data, without being explicitly programmed. In the past decade, machine learning has given us self-driving cars, practical speech recognition, effective web search, and a vastly improved understanding of the human genome. This is a great introduction, accessible to all. If you enjoy math, machines, and binary code, this lunch & learn is one you won’t want to miss!

Speaker: Haider Al-Saidi is the Chair of Applied Computer Education at Red River College. Haider is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and serves as Chair of the Business Technology Management Accreditation Counsel.

From 1993 until 2000, Haider led the development team of ICUCOM Corporation in Troy, New York, which was then acquired by Applied Wave Research in El Segundo, California, where he worked until 2002. Haider then joined Assiniboine Community College in 2002, working with a team to develop their Wireless Communication Engineering Technology program.

The same year, he started Tiacomm, an IT startup company. Haider’s current interests are in areas of adaptive systems and machine learning. He started working in this field while at ICUCOM Corporation when he developed algorithms to solve the multipath phenomenon using decision feedback equalization. He also used algorithms that he developed for antenna arrays.
